Rajinikanth: The Superstar

Born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in the year 1950, Rajinikanth is a cultural icon of Tamil Nadu. His immense popularity and appeal can be attributed from his stylish delivery of dialogues, unique mannerisms and tremendous screen presence. Till date he is the most bankable star of Indian cinema and can carry a film single-handedly on his shoulders.

Popularly known as 'Thalaivar', Rajinikanth made his screen debut in the year 1975 and initially started off as a supporting artist in various films. The famous director K.Balachander acted as his mentor and introduced him to the industry. He had to struggle a lot during the early stages of his life due to the poor financial condition of his family. He did his schooling from Bangalore and did jobs of varied nature during his stay in the city. It was during his stint as a bus conductor in Bangalore that he nurtured his ambition of becoming an actor. Before joining the industry Rajinikanth acted in various stage plays.

Rajinikanth though being a Marathi by birth has not acted in any Marathi films till date. He has done a wide variety of roles in various Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films.Among the major films in his career, Katha Sangama, Apporva Raagangal, Mullum Malarum and Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri deserves special mention. Rajinikanth's popularity among the masses started growing from the year 1980 and reached its peak in the year 1988. Films like Mahviran and Vellikaran made him the new superstar of Tamil cinema. From then on, there was no looking back for the superstar as he started to deliver hits one after the other. Besides acting Rajinikanth has also acted as a playback singer, screen play writer and film producer in some of his films. He is also the second highest paid actor in Asia having received an amount of 26 crores for his latest blockbuster 'Sivaji: The Boss'.

Apart from being a successful film star Rajinikanth is also known for his various philanthropic activities. Besides receiving various felicitations, he has also received the prestigious 'Padma Bhushan' the third highest civilian award for his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

One of the most famous mannerisms of Rajinikanth which stands out as quite symbolic is the way he flips up his cigarette in the air and then goes on catch it with his lips, before pouncing on the villains. This famous act is followed by most of his fanatical supporters who surely consider him as a demi-God.
