You the River - Me the Woman by Kanakrekha

My rudimentary knowledge of geography tells me that river is a natural stream of water which flows in a channel towards the mouth of lake or another river or the seas. Rivers have two banks. They have a bed over which the water flows. Rivers start from a source. Rivers always flow downhill to merge into the ocean, the final destination -merging with divinity.

So much like anywoman, every woman, a woman like me –for instance?

River my ally my friend -we have so much in common. The likeness most striking is in the sad sad fact that you dear friend remain bound by the banks and I - contained in worldly peripheries. And yet when we rebel and break shackles – the world around us pays a heavy price!

But whereas you have a well charted life -emerging evolving and flowing the three well defined courses - I cruise the unanticipated unpredicted ever meandering walks of life. Sometimes cautiously and successfully striding them and at others I falter trip and fall. For it is the Lady Luck herself who sets the course of destiny for me! At times a smooth sail at times a rough road!

You my friend born of the pillars of rocky strength with origins in the mountains – just like my mother - my father, our origins remain our life support system. When deprived of their love – the elixir of life -like you, I too would dry out to my death.

But as adolescent lasses we are equally youthful and defiant like the liberated young women of the present times!  It is the intoxicating youth and thoughtless adolescence that makes our world so very exciting, the horizon to eternity beckons us, charming us to go all out and explore!

My life too like yours begins as an eager little girl all set to explore the world on my terms, with that little voice in the heart cheering me to conquer it! Energized like you river my friend – fresh sparkling and friendly, fast flowing, jungle to jungle hill to hill, never a care in mind - you just go on where ever your wanderlust takes you - whether there are stones or boulders for you to flow over, you couldn’t care less - there are precincts and restraints for me but I couldn’t care less either! There is nothing stopping us!

It is this course of life that I the woman loves the most, for I live with my dreams – dreams to find and meet my soul mate, eager and passionate about meeting him and finally to unite with him to be one –body and soul! Like you my friend I am also a river in hurry to cross all the barriers and find solace in -my ocean my friend my lover my Universe to unite with him!

However the first flush of beauty and youth invites the first frights to our vulnerability. You never know my dear friend when a sharp twist on this expedition would lead you to a chasm or a gorge. We are pleasantly unaware when a canyon would be waiting to gulp you down or a lecherous soul sets trap for me.

Or when a DAM is built to check your flow?  Does not everyone know that rivers survive only when they are allowed to flow freely? The natural free flowing water in a river is ‘living’ water; reservoirs turn it into dead water – a dead soul. A dead soul like mine when I am dictated upon and chained to outlived ethos in the name of tradition, religion and rituals.                                            We - you river and me the woman – can not survive when strapped to the dictates of a naïve social order.

For you there are rapids and water falls on this journey to adulthood, and hurdles appear unexpectedly for me en route to maturity.  For exuberance of youth brings trials and tribulations of evolving into a woman from a juvenile.

However the road to paradise through the walks of life is like bed of petals - if someone walks along, holding hands -then it’s a simple straight course. But, it does not happen like a fairy tale to every woman, to every princess - at times the hand is pulled away by destiny or pulled back by the fellow traveler –then the course I stride is like yours – a circuitous tortuous one.

Then there are times when rivers are so often treated like commodities -commercial commodities! Just like women my dear friend!

Because development to this consumerist world means converting nature into cash. The world forgets opportunely that a river is not just a stream of flowing water; it is revered like a mother – like a woman. It has close link with culture and civilization. There are going to be times of water crisis, and the world has to bear in mind to greet you with respect. Just as in times of crisis we the children turn to Mothers for support, the naïve people have to bear in mind that you river have to be approached harmoniously and not plundered for your bounty!

A free flowing Himalayan river like you, like The Ganga, brings along rich nutrients, rich soil down to the plains contributing to land formation and land fertility. This ceases to happen if dams trap your rich soil and the fields in the plains are deprived of it. Consequently the farmers are forced to use chemical fertilizers in excess. All this leads to make   agriculture economically unviable and environmentally unsustainable. But star crossed as we are my friend – both of us have been exploited down the ages for others’ gains.

Your middle course is where you become wider and deeper. The land which the river flows over is becoming flatter. Like a matured woman there is much calmness and depth, for I too -just like a leader of a clan,  connect and bond with near and dear ones. Just as you the river, take along all the other rivers, your tributaries that join you. We give the world -all that we have -in the very wholeness of the word; we contribute to the world preserving nothing for ourselves. You contribute through your fertile land and me through my fruitful womb and fertile mind to ensure that all humanity flourishes and thrives which would not be possible with out us – you the river, me the woman.

The world has to understand that you the river do not just belong to the humans but all aquatic life and other life forms. Disrupting river flow in the name of development and displacing the river bank communities should be checked. Like wise me the woman does not just belong to home and hearth, I need to grow, advance and enrich one and all. You need to retain your beauty with plantations of fruit, medicine, fiber, nut yielding trees. I need to retain my identity and yet be a woman who loves and needs to be loved!

As you grow old, you slow down like me, flowing ever so softly though ecstatic and content and blissful with the wisdom that you are finally going to be relieved of all your obligations and tasks, to enjoy the fruits of labour in the much awaited embrace of the ocean. Just as I endeavor to gain my nirvana. We are so similar –                                 You the River Me the Woman

MANJUSHA .. A BIG THANKS :)
YES, A RIVER CERTAINLY SEEMS SO MUCH LIKE A WOMAN STRONG, WILFUL AND FOREVER 'GIVING'

MEN DO RECOGNISE THE STRENGTH OF A WOMAN, HOWEVER AT TIMES THEY DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE IT.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR READING AND APPRECIATING IT.

Kanak,
Just read your blog. Its beautiful. Power of woman can be seen with this... to stop massive destruction due to tremendous force of maa ganga, Bhagwan Shiv has to bind her in his hairs.
I personally liked the way you described woman of different agegroups with their specific characteristics compared with the journey of river from mountains to sea. In this case sea is ultimate divine who welcomes the river with open arms and revives the energy of tired soul of river. Its really beautiful & energizes me as a woman while facing day-to-day tests & milestones. Keep on posting such beautiful blogs. I think you are a very well read, sensitive, intelligent, introvert person who wants to express herself to world in a different way.
For all male bloggers: Pls. start appreciating woman. All wars which are famous for being fought due to women are actually due to testosterone levels of those men & their MCP attitudes & male egos, so stop blaiming woman. Haven't you heard about Jhansi ki rani who fought for freedom of country. Country which constitutes of men, women & children. She never fought for a male. Have some inspiration & start changing before its too late.

A BIG APOLOGY KANAK,SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BLOG,DON'T MEAN TO DISTRACT WITH MY COMMENT,BUT TALKING ABOUT RAM,SITA AND PRIZED POSSESSION,CAN'T HELP SAYING ONE THING

'GHAT GHAT KE GYATA RAAM,UPNE PRIZED POSSESSION,KO KAHAN SAMAJ PAYE,JISNE UNKE LIYE SUBB KUCCH CHODA,USKII HEI AGANIPARIKSHA LEE,AUR VHO BHI LOGO KE KAHANE PE.YES HE FOUGHT A WAR TO BRING SITA BACK,BUT SITA HAD ALREADY WON A WAR AGAINST RAVAN,BEFORE HIM,PROTECTING HER SATITVA ,ALL ALONG:)

Jayasree, no offence or sarcasm was meant. See it this way, Lord Shree Ram had to compete in the swayamvar with many others to win Seethamaiya in the first instance, so she was his prized possession and when she was taken away by Ravan Ram had to wage a war to get her back. Had Ram been lured and taken away by Soorpanaka, as you and Kanak are saying, perhaps Sita might not have even bothered to retrieve him back. I wonder whether it would have been for better challenges or better temptations
@Dina, I appreciate your views.

OH OH...... INSTEAD OF ENJOYING THE FLOW OF WORDS, WHY AGAIN THE SAME TOPIC OF MEN AND WOMEN !
Posted by: Dina BhattOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 9:19:25 PM
@KANAK,YOU SAID IT:)
@G,"OWN MEN"?WE DON'T CONIDER MAN AS A TROPHY
"WOMEN CAN'T WIN"?(SAYS WHO?)WE WOULD'NT COMPETE,BECAUSE WE DON'T CONSIDER MEN AS AN OBJECT,THEY ARE WAY MORE TO US THEN THAT.
YES,BOTH GENDER HAVE THERE OWN MARITS AND DEMERITS,OUR GREATEST MERIT IS,WE ARE MAN'S BIGGEST STRENGTH TOO,AND WE WIN THAT WITHOUT EVEN COMPETING
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 5:46:05 PM
G THAT IS THE CRUX OF THE MATTER...
WOMEN NEVER CONSIDER MEN AS 'TOPHY' TO BE WON OVER! THERE ARE BETTER CHALLENGES BETTER TEMPATIONS!
FOR THE SAME REASON WOMEN DO NOT HAVE ANY WISH TO OWN A HAREM OR IMITATE MEN IN THAT RESPECT.

Posted by: Jayasree POn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 5:41:34 PM
PRASADJI,I AGREE WITH YOUR LAST SENTENCE.BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE SARCASM HIDDEN IN THE FIRST LINE.PLEASE ILLUSTRATE.
Posted by: G S PrasadOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 3:10:44 PM
With due respect, it is pointed out that prizes dont compete to own the sportsmen/competitors, likewise women cant win and own men :) also, never seen or heard a women owning a harem either :) Women/Men if try to imitate each other would make a sorrowful screcrow :) Men and women are counter parts to each other, with their own merits and demerits and they should be happy as they are.
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 1:55:57 PM
JAY BRILLIANT RESPONSE :)-
WOMEN HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN CHASING MEN AND OF COURSE ANYTHING OBTAINED BY FORCE IS NOT WORTH IT - LOVELY !!!
WONDER WHAT MEN HAVE TO SAY TO THIS ?????
Posted by: Jayasree POn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 1:41:09 PM
KANAK,WOMAN THINKS, IT IS MEANINGLESS TO FIGHT FOR A MAN
AS SHE HAS OTHER PRIORITIES IN HER LIFE(I EXPRESSED MY OPINION).ANOTHER ANSWER IS,SHE DOESN'T WANT TO TAKE ANYTHING BY FORCE(SHOWS HER MATURITY).SHE IS READY TO SACRIFICE.
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 12:46:37 PM
MAHESH VERY TURE, RIVER GIVES LIFE- LIKE MOTHER :)
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 12:37:12 PM
JAY WHAT YOU SAY IS VERY OBVIOUS...SORRY MENKIND :-P
BUT ANOTHER POINT- WHY DONT WOMEN FIND MEN ATTRACTIVE ENOUGH TO START A WAR? THEY ARE AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH IM SURE!

ANEET PRASADJI HAS ALREADY CLEARED HIS STAND ON THIS ONE...
HE MEANS A HWANG HO TYPE OF RIVER NOT THE GANGES!
GOOD ONE- PRAY..AAG :)GOOD ADVICE NEVERTHELESS

Nice one !! women= rivers!!
civilasations have survived along with rivers (women)..what would have happend without women(rivers)
wouldnt had survived :))

ANEET SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT! I actually loved writing this one, though it took me long time finishing it.

Actually you cd compare dams to men, for they are good and they are bad :-P .. for the rivers , that is !

Posted by: Aneet ROn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 11:30:06 AM
@prasadji,when three rivers meet they call it PRAYAAG but sometimes when their living equivalent meet we have to PRAY(4)AAG, not to start:)
Posted by: Jayasree POn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 11:23:47 AM
RAM,IF MEN FIGHT FOR WOMEN,IT IS THEIR FOOLISHNESS.IF A WOMAN IS VERY ATTRACTIVE AND THE MEN CAN'T JUST TAKE THEIR EYES OFF HER,IS IT HER FAULT?
Posted by: Aneet ROn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 11:15:41 AM
Intially I thought of comparing DAMS with men but after reading some healthy-cosy comments I backed off at last moment:)
Posted by: Aneet ROn: Thursday, October 22, 2009 11:01:03 AM
Even if it is MANmade, flooding is a natural part of a rivers cycle.it erodes the channel only to create new deposition and fertile flood plains further.I was happy and busy drowning myself in the cascading flow of the mesmerising description .be it course, banks, canyon.gorge, flooding or whatever.my infant eye could hardly PaY AtTeNtIoN to anything else other than the blue wonder..your post itself is a gangetic river of words kr. rivers-no borders can stop them and no prize for guessing its gender.keep flowing ma. nice start to my new samvat 2066:)

@ DINA -AURAT TERE KITNE ROOP -
TU HI DURGA TU HI MA TU HI NADI!
YOU SAID IT GAL :) WONDERFUL!!!

RAM -WOMEN ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF WARS -IT IS THE MAN WHO 'MAKE' THEM SO. AS FOR THE WARS FOUGHT FOR WHICH WOMEN HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED AS THE PRIME REASON BY HISTORIANS (ANCIENT MALE HISTORIANS MIND YOU!), THEY WERE JUST A VIA MEDIA FOR THE OPPOSING SIDES TO EXPRESS THEIR MACHISMO AND IMPRESS THE LADIES CONCERNED!

ALSO, PRAY WHY DID NOT WOMEN FIGHT A WAR FOR MEN ???? GUESS THE EFFORT ISN'T WORTH IT :-P
AUR BHAI, BHAGWAN KI BANAYI HUI HAR ACHCHHI CHEEZE KE LIYE LADAYI TO HOGI HI..NADI HO YA ZAMEEN YA AURAT - LOL

IN PHYSICS WE HAVE READ THAT WATER FINDS ITS LEVEL SO DOES THE WOMEN SHE CAN EITHER MAKE OR UNMAKE A HOME A WOMEN HAS BEEN THE CAUSE OF MANY A WAR LIKE HELEN OF TROY RANI PADMINI OF CHITTOR SO HAS THE RIVERS HAVE THE RIVERS BECOME THE CAUSE OF MANY DISPUTES BETWEEN MANY STATES THE SIMILARITIES ABOUND KANAK SO CHALNA DE UR GANGA KE LEHEREN.

@ Gt THANKS YOU ARE VERY KIND :)
YOU ARE RIGHT, DAMS AND BARRIERS ARE REQUIRED FOR RIVERS TO CONFINE FLOODS AND TO DEAL WITH FAMINE AS ALSO FOR THERMAL POWER GENERATION TO NAME A FEW MAN MADE CHANGES IN THE COURSE OFA RIVER.
SIMILARLY SOME RESTRAINTS REMAIN OBLIGATORY FOR WOMEN (AND MEN ) TOO! FOR IN ABSENCE OF ETHICS, THE SOCIETY GOES HAY WIRE.

exemplary thought..@ Kanak..

all the rivers in India are having the women names ..(except the bramaputra)..

nice comparison of the stages of the river with womenhood..
"I need to retain my identity and yet be a woman who loves and needs to be loved! "
"you the river and me the woman"-superb..
you are the "QUEEN OF THE BLOGGERS"

********
n.b.
dams and barriers should be there to avoid floods at one side and famine at the other side...
sometime overflows also dangerous...
and maximum natural calamities are caused by rivers..

VENKY -THANK YOU! YES THE ANALOGY IS SO VERY STRIKING. ASO IN A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE, WHAT WITH GOLBAL WARMING AND WATER CRISIS BEING A MAJOR PROBLEM FACING THE WORLD, IN THE INDIAN CONTEXT WE NEED TO INVOLVE THE RIVER BANK COMMUNITES AND DELEGATE THEM A MORE INCLUSIVE ROLE IN RIVER PROTECTION PROGRAMMES.

THANK YOU FOR FORWARDING THE BLOG :)
