Advantage -BEAUTY? by Kanakrekha

Advantage –BEAUTY ?

This is the age of discriminations; there is a discrimination against nationality, religion, colour, caste, class, creed, race, sex, age and so on. But there is another type of discrimination that is experienced by the not so beautiful people as against the beautiful! An old grouse and debate one may say which refuses to die unlike -BEAUTY.

The children of the lesser God feel that the pretty faces get favoured even if they do not deserve and the average looking people are given second hand treatment.

We have to admit, grudgingly or otherwise, we all aspire to have a beautiful face. The burgeoning beauty business -it would be appropriate to call it so -the beauty industry, is an 'in your beautiful face' case in study. Beauty may be skin deep but most of the world is bewitched with the outward appearance. Unfair it may be but that is the way of the world –

Mere dost -Jo dikhta hai  Wo bikta hai - is an unwritten rule

Do not judge a book by its cover is an old idiom, but don't we all do it? The advertising industry, matrimonial columns are a ubiquitous reminder to this fact. While choosing a spouse, people seldom look for an average looking person (read girl), no matter how ordinary he is himself - they all desire to have a beautiful bride.

Beauty does count and the beautiful do get that coveted job or a raise because of her/his looks. This sadly is a global phenomenon and like recession, quite unfair too -people lose out on opportunities and relationships due to no fault of theirs! It is always the striking faces that devour all the attention and goodwill.

It may be an ugly pill to swallow from but beauty plays an important role in career advancement. Career options widen a tad more for a good looking person comparatively. For example if for the same job, the choice is between a beautiful girl with the required intelligence and the 'not so beautiful one' with the same level of intelligence or may be a level higher  - no points for guessing who gets the job! So beauty does get prioritized!

However I believe, ultimately beautiful or ordinary, everyone has to perform and deliver to sustain and justify their position and remuneration. Even for a modelling career which is essentially a 'beauty job', intelligence, knowledge, communication skills and the right aptitude are pre requisite.

It is always the beautiful baby who gets more love and the pretty daughter in law who gets more attention at a family gathering. But then only to a certain extent – for beautiful is as beautiful does ! A woman with beauty but no brains is like an empty vessel, there is a lot of room for content there. Where as a woman with beauty and brains is a lethal combination – which is actually a male perspective ! As a woman I would love to befriend such a person.

And again, of what use is a handsome man if he can not be a provider, a guide and a driving force to his family? Only good looks can not run a happy home one has to work hard and nurture the family intelligently using one's wisdom and practical knowledge. I strongly believe - when one is beautiful inside, each one of us sees the person in different light. That person with a sensitive and compassionate heart always has the most beautiful face to look at! Be it Gandhiji or Mother Teresa.

A word about the deserving beautiful people – many a time their pretty face over shadows their calibre, capabilities and intelligence and their success is attributed to their good looks. DISADVANTAGE – Beauty?

Though inner beauty is long lasting but good looks do matter,(enhance the confidence level)if some one is blessed with both, then a deadly combo. These days good looks or one can say personnel grooming(to look beautiful or smart)is order of the day.

@ SUMANA Indeed! Beauty remains skin deep if one was 'not so beautiful ' inside :)

It is important to be beautiful inside .

Shreeram Agree with you that people with pure hearts glow with inner beauty - the kind we find on the faces of saints, nuns and sadhvis.

However we are talking about normal people and their reflexes - their abstarct responses to beauty. It is indeed a difficult choice to make when it comes to choosing one of the two with same IQ and different looks.
If it is a matter of chooosing a g/f, b/f or spouse, one would certainly give preference to looks. However if its about employing a person -choice becomes all the more difficult. Especially when one is insecure about his/her own looks. A better looking person does have an edge.

DINA Beauty / Looks are the primal attraction when we lay our eyes at a person, it is a fact of life and can not be denied. And Yes ppl do get jealous enough to attribute one's success to one's looks too. Nadaan logon ki nadani bhari baatien :))

Leela You beautiful one :) Im sure you work hard to deserve what you get !!! Let others think otherwise - who cares ??? LOL

yes..Beauty may get an opportunity but brain will make it to sustain. I wont agree with your view that, with same or higher IQ people may be side lined becoz of beauty. if i were in selection of such persons i wont do.Beauty not only increases face value, but also the inner confidence. If we remain pure at heart, doing sincere efforts ( yoga, meditation )automatically our face will glow.. thats the permanent beauty! other things get washed away by the stream of time!!

RAVI N VENKAT COMPLETELY AGREE -HARD WORK, INTELLIGENCE AND GOOD NATURE FAR OUTWEIGH BEAUTY, BUT FACT REMAINS :
GOOD LOOKS ARE AN ADDED ADVANTEGE!
RAVI THX FOR THE SHAER :)

@Venkat - Since a lot of people I found were usic lovers....her is a song for the topic:

Khudi ko kar Bunland itna
Ke har taqdeer se pehle,

Kuda Bande se khud pooche
Ke bata teri Raza kya hai.
Posted by: Venkat P SOn: Thursday, June 04, 2009 10:12:51 PM
Rightly said Ravi. One has to work on his strengths to make himself beautiful.
Posted by: Ravi GorthiOn: Thursday, June 04, 2009 7:30:11 PM
@ Kanak - If two people have the same EQ/IQ and the job description does not require any other qualities, then its a tough selection. Would I select the candidate based on beauty.....maybe no... I have never come accross such a scenario so I don't think I can justify my answer.....

One thing is for sure....BEAUTY brings a lot of self confidence and self esteem.....lack of it does affect self confidence and self esteem. But, it is upto the individual how to handle it. GOD has made each one of us SPECIAL. Keeping this in mind and working on our strengths is what we can do. Rest HE will take care of. This is my belief.

RAVI WHEN WE HAVE TWO CANDIDATES WITH -SAME QUALIFICATIONS /EQ/IQ ETC ETC , THE PERSON WITH BETTER LOOKS HAS MORE CHANCES TO BE SELECTED FOR THE SAME JOB – ANY JOB. AM I RIGHT? YOU ARE IN BETTER POSITION TO JUDGE THAT “CHARMING AND PRESENTABLE” + BEAUTY = IRRESISITIBLE CANDIDATE! CONSIDERING THE GREY MATTER IS THE CONSTANT AND BEAUTY THE VARIABLE, THE EQUATION BECOMES CLEARER. OR DOES IT?

SURESHJI I HAVE BEEN A VICTIM AND THE BENEFICIARY OF THE ‘BEAUTY DISCRIMINATION’ AS ALL OF US ARE AT ONE TIME OR THE OTHER, HENCE THE PERCEPTION IS BASED ON FACTS :) THANK YOU FOR AGREEING WITH ME.

ANEET WELL SAID ‘THE NEWS ROOM’ IS THE BEST SHOWCASE THAT PROVES MY POINT. IN THIS DOG EAT DOG KINDA SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST WORLD ; LOOKS ARE THE PRIMARY ATTRIBUTES TO PUSH ONE SELF. THE SOONER ONE REALIASES, THE BETTER IT IS.
PADHAYI LIKHAYI TO SAB HI HAR RAHE HAIN AND IT IS SUMTHING WE CAN ACHIEVE BUT GOOD LOOKS ARE AN ADD ON TO HELP CLIMB THAT PROVERBIAL LADDER.
SHALL REPOST IT THX AGN ?

we are dwelling in a maked up world so theres no reason for beauty to be discounted.its soothing and like creating a first impression which MAY not be the last, but surely helps you climb the ladder.of late the lethal combo is on the rise(take a look at the newsroom people)

@ Kanak - I agree with you to the fact that beauty has quite a significant importance in relationships....but I beg to differ with you on the point that employment opportunities are based on beauty. Lets face it...each job has its own requirement. If I am recuiting for a Front desk job or a model, the job requirement is that the person needs to look charming and presentable....whereas if it is any back office requirement, beauty might not be of that much importance.

Frankly, I think I am the most charming and intelligent person in the world......but my UGLY boss gets to climb the corporate ladder :):):)

VENKAT -IT IS INDEED A SOUR GRAPES CASE.

DURGESH -IT TAKES TIME AND EFFORT TO KNOW A PERSON FOR HIS/HER INNER BEAUTY TILL THEN CHAND SA MUKHDA JII KO LUBHAYE !

PRAKASH -I BELIEVE IF A PERSON IS EVEN AVG LOOKING HIS/HER HARD WORK N GOOD NATURE MAKES HIM LOVABLE.

BRAJ - YE SWEETY KAUN HAI KAHAN HAI ? :)

ARUNJI YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! AND I THINK YOU ARE A VICTIM URSELF:)

ASHOK DIKHAWE KA ZAMANA HAI! EVERYTHING IS UP FOR SALE SO EVERYTHING HAS TO BE MARKETED WELL..PACKAGED WEEL!!!

2 Kanak---I must add here that beautiful/handsome people have the wrath of people--mostly of their own sex-----

Yes, Beauty as well as Sweety has advantage.

If one is lagging in the beauty parameter. Then one should try to be Sweety: Sweet in talk, Sweet in behaviour, Sweet in action.

Bol do mithe bol, Soniye..

kanak,

My comments are only with reference to girls and ya thanks for rejuvinating me with this blog as I was feeling very low before reading this.

The first thing that cathes one's eye is the beauty of a person .If a girl is beautifull surely I might feel like appreciating the fact and I might even whistle ( the consequences are a different part of the story) .I also feel that girls should wear tiny clothes so that more and more people acknowledge her outer beauty that way it boosts her selfconfidence . So beauty doesnt have much to do with facial looks alone.

The door for displaying one's inner beauty opens up only when the outer beauty is advertised with tremendous bhakti .

agreed with Venkat..beauty has some edge..
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Tuesday, June 02, 2009 6:26:01 PM
SO ALL OF US AGREE THAT BEAUTY AND GOOD LOOKS (THEY ARE NOT THE SAME) DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHETHER IT IS AN EMPOLYMENT OPPORTUNITY - EVERYONE LIKES A PRETTY FACE TO WORK WITH OR A RELATIONSHIP - LOOKS REMAIN THE FAVOURITE PRIMAL ATTRACTION FACTOR. THE FACT THAT A PERSON IS INTELLECTUALLY STIMULATING AS WELL IS THE ICING :)

THX G :)

I am sure majority of the viewers would say beauty is secondary and that sensitivity, intelligence, etc. etc. are more important. I personally feel out of my experiences that beauty definitely has an edge. (With a extra beauty/handsome features, I would have gone places ...HA HA) No wonder today each one of us - be it an actor, politician, businessman, college student, name anybody - does something or the other to enhance his beauty. Even sticking to fitness regimes, I would say, if on an eye to maintain the beauty ! Today Management lessons do teach us the importance of Personality, Soft skills; but other things remaining equal, the decisive factor is the beauty factor. So I would definitely say it is Advantage Beauty!

And for those who say it is Disadvantage - ie. attributing someone's success to good looks - I think they are crying 'these grapes are sour'. One should learn to know and appreciate beauty.
